Growing up in the small and sleepy town of Robertsfors in Sweden on a diet of Nirvana, it was probably inevitable that the four girls with guitars that make up Sahara Hotnights (named after an Australian race horse) would rebel and fly in the face of girl band convention--they're hardly shy and retiring pop wannabees. Their album debut, C'mon Let's Pretend made stars of them in their native Sweden, and the extreme noise pop of the title track and swaggering rock of "Push On Some More"--Elastica with reckless attitude--make it easy to see why. Infectious and seemingly inexhaustible energy aside, it's Maria Andersson's shouty-mouthed vocals that make "Oh Darling", "Wake Up", "Kicks" and the rest of C'mon Let's Pretend impossible to ignore. --Dan Gennoe
