A cross between Alanis Morissette and Kylie Minogue, you couldn't engineer a more likely late '90s pop star than Natalie Imbrugila if you tried. Blessed with a stunning bone structure and a passable voice, Australian soap star Imbruglia and producer Phil Thornally turned Ednaswap's gritty "Torn" into a swirling pop confection. Nothing else on her debut quite matches it, in part because Left of the Middle hews closer to the center than it cares to admit. Imbruglia manages to touch on a wide range of female styles--angry ("One More Addiction"), electronica ("Big Mistake"), and yearning ("Smoke")--without leaving her fingerprints on any of them. --Steven Mirkin

Parmi les chanteuses qui occupent le créneau passablement encombré de la ballade mélancolique, Natalie Imbruglia est une des plus convaincantes, bien plus que Dido par exemple. Australienne comme sa consœur Kylie Minogue, la belle ne joue pas de ses sexy atouts pour séduire. Si l'amour est ici aussi célébré, c'est sur le ton de la confidence empreinte de nostalgie, à laquelle de sophistiqués arrangements apportent la touche nécessaire de crédibilité un brin folk. L'hédonisme festif comme la touche d'électronique sont laissés à d'autres qui illustrent pourtant le même thème. Avec White Lillies Island, Natalia Imbruglia prolonge le succès de son premier album Left Of The Middle réalisé en 1998. Du présent opus, aussi réussi, émerge un single légèrement rock, "That Day, Wrong Impression", qui rappelle le précédent carton de "Torn". De l'ensemble, c'est surtout le touchant "Goodbye, Hurricane" que l'on retiendra. --Hervé Comte
