Le Tigre is Kathleen Hanna (Bikini Kill), Johanna, and video artist Sadie Benning. As an electronic act, the trio celebrates the radical aspirations of 90's DIY, feminist, punk art rather than playing into the "women in rock" stereotypes of feminist rage. This is their second album, which now includes a video of the song "Well Well Well".
On Feminist Sweepstakes, Le Tigre answer their own implied rhetorical question as to who's winning. Singer Kathleen Hannah (Bikini Kill, Julie Ruin) breaks down barriers between politics and dancing, opening the floodgates for both. Le Tigre are "the band with the roller skate jams," packing their pink satin jackets with more fun and feminism than ever. Switching instruments and vocals, bandmates Johanna Fateman and J.D. Samson argue with drum machines and arm themselves in conversational cutups that signify the future of riot grrrl fallout. Cackling like witches as an overdubbed, screechy heavy metal solo flies overhead on "LT Tour Theme," these ladies have secured their status as artists of the progressive postmodern kind as they sprint through the wilderness of modern feminism and 21st-century punk rock like Xena on Ecstasy or Gloria Steinem before she did Coach ads. That's because Le Tigre are more articulate than ever, musically and lyrically. Unafraid of experimentation, sampling, and emotional honesty, the band shows once again that the personal is political, and pushes the envelope with both medium and message. Le Tigre tackle the complexities of modern awareness while reveling in the feel of a mid-'70s disco party set somewhere ahead of our time, proving that it's not so hard to dance to--and believe in--the hopes of the future and the legacy of the past at the same time. --Cyndi Elliott
This is their classic self-titled first album. Added are four tracks taken from a BBC "Evening Session" that Le Tigre recorded during that time. "These songs are addictive. They will be the soundtrack to kitchen dance parties in every house this album enters"--Pitchfork.
Described as a perfectly judged mix of bubblegum punk, shouty slogans, jerky electro pulses, new wave keyboard action, and old school drum patterns, Le Tigre is a Pop band with something to say. On this CD single the title track is backed with 'New Kicks' & also includes an enhanced section featuring 'New Kicks' the music video. Universal. 2005.
Professional force-to-be-reckoned-with (and Bikini Kill frontwoman) Kathleen Hanna takes on George Clinton's "free your ass and your mind will follow" mantra with her current project Le Tigre. Following their ace eponymous debut debut, the pop-punk trio of Hanna, Johanna Fateman, and Sadie Benning return with "From the Desk of Mr. Lady," a snappy suckerpunch of subversion. Using simple drum machines, electric guitar power chords, and Hanna's rebel yell, they create hard and shiny dancecore with a bad attitude. On this short and sweet EP, "Bang! Bang!" is the most poignant track, chronicling the shooting of unarmed African immigrant Amadou Diallo in New York. It ends with a bone-chilling drum sequence that represents the 41 shots fired by NYPD officers, who were ultimately acquitted. Le Tigre achieve the unusual by seamlessly uniting fun music with revolutionary ideas: this EP is unabashedly political, angry, and addictive. It rocks. --Lizz Mendez Berry
