Kat Bjelland turned down a job in old sparring partner Courtney Love's new all-girl band Bastard to make Amusia and right now, it seems the ex-Babes in Toyland singer has made the right choice. Bjelland hasn't sung with this passion and range for a long time now, not since the Babes' incredible 1992 major label debut "Fontanelle". Yet Amusia could top even that, with its range of bent lullabies (the eerie "Rasacea"), happy-sad exorcisms ("Gone Away", "Anathema") and general welter of impassioned, jarring emotion. Perhaps the presence of husband Glen Mattson on drums has helped to give Bjelland a new confidence to match the punk rock angst. Who knows? But where before the Babes could sometimes sound one-dimensional in their righteous anger, this is definitely a multi-dimensional, inspirational experience. --Jerry Thackray
